Robert Lee Shaw was born and raised in Austin, Texas. A lifelong Austinite, Robert attended L.C. Anderson High School where he played basketball, football and track. It was there that Robert fell in love with the game of basketball.
After high school, Robert attended Huston-Tillotson College where he had an outstanding basketball career. He later attended Texas Southern University and was a member of their 1953 team that played in the NAIA National Tournament.
Coach Shaw spent his career teaching and coaching in the Austin Independent School District. He returned to his alma mater, L.C. Anderson High School, where he taught and served as the head basketball coach. His teams consistently competed for district championships.
After the integration of schools, Coach Shaw continued his career at various AISD schools including Reagan High School. He was known for his ability to develop young players and his commitment to academic excellence.
Robert Lee Shaw, Sr. was married to Geraldine Shaw. They had several children together. He was an active member of his church and community throughout his life.
