Martha Snell Lathon is a native of Smith County and attended school at Stanton Elementary and High School and Emmett Scott High School in Tyler.
Martha attended Jarvis Christian College, Hawkins, Texas, where she majored in Physical Education and received a minor in biology. She received her Master's degree from Texas Women University in Denton, Texas. She later became certified to teach Math.
She started her teaching and coaching career at Carver High School in Hallsville, Texas. She later moved to Dunbar Jr. High School in Lufkin and finally to Stanton High School in Jacksonville, Texas.
In Jacksonville she coached girls basketball, track and taught PE. Her basketball team won district championships in 1964 and 1965. Martha served as the assistant coach on the track team and worked with the girls who won the 1965 880 relay team during the state PVIL competition at Prairie View.
Martha resides in Arp, Texas and has been married to Clyde Lathon for 57 years. She is the mother of Dr. Clyde A. Lathon, Christyn E. Lathon and Michelle L. Brown. She also has seven grandchildren. Martha enjoys volunteering and is an active member of True Vine Baptist Church.
