Karl Hartfield was born in Dallas, Texas. Attended I.M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth, Texas where he was a standout sprinter.
In 1966, he was an anchor on a relay team that set a national record at the State Track meet (after Terrell had integrated to UIL). The record stood for over ten years. He was offered a scholarship to Southern University and ran the 440.
In 1968, Karl ran in the NCAA Championships. While in college, he was on the team that also set track records. He joined the Army, met his wife and has been married for 46 years. Karl is a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
