Howard Bernard Childress was born December 11, 1936 to Leroy and Nealey Childress in Brookshire, Texas. He attended elementary and junior high school in Katy, Texas then enrolled at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, Texas where he graduated in 1954.

Howard played basketball, baseball, and ran track while in high school. His track coach at the time was Mr. Alfred T. Earlington, Principal.

Howard received his B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education from Texas Southern University in 1959. His first Head Coaching job was at J. Newton Jenkins High School, Baytown, Texas. He later moved to Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston. Later he moved to George Washington Carver High School in Baytown. After desegregation of schools, Howard was moved to Cedar Bayou Jr. High School. He ended his career at Robert E. Lee High School as a Physical Education teacher.

He received his M.Ed. degree from Texas Southern University in 1969. Howard retired from Goose Creek CISD. He is a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and the TSTA/Goose Creek Retired Teachers Association for over 20 years. He is a Life Member of The National Education Association. Howard is a certified Texas High School Basketball Referee who has worked varsity games for over 15 years.

Howard and his wife, Cleomie, have been married for 59 years. They have three children, Roderick "Tre" of Baytown, Keith of Austin, and Natasha of Cedar Hill, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Howard is an active member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where he serves as a Sunday School Teacher. Reverend Don D. Batts, pastor.
