Eural Smothers, also known as "Duck" attended L.C. Anderson High School in Austin, Texas from 1960 and graduating in 1963. During his high school career, Eural was a multi-sport athlete; mastering great skills in football, basketball, baseball and track.
During his first year of high school Duck played on the football B team in 1960 under the leadership of head coach Jack A. McDonald. Under the head coaching of Lawrence Britton, Smothers also played on both the sophomore and varsity basketball B teams, and ran varsity track in 1960.
From 1961 through 1962 Smothers played on the varsity football team under head coach Raymond Timmons. In 1961, Eural played on the last championship team of L.C. Anderson High School. Smothers received All-District and All-State letter honors in both 1961 and 1962 for football. He earned even more letter honors for basketball in 1961 under the leadership of Coach L. Jackson and again in 1962 under Coach Lawrence Britton. If basketball and football were not enough, Smothers was awarded additional letter honors for varsity baseball under Coach Jack A. McDonald in 1962.
After high school smothers attended City College of San Francisco located in San Francisco, CA in 1964 and 1965. Later he received a scholarship to Arizona State University, Eural, however attended and graduated Sacramento State University in 1971, earning his teaching credentials and majoring in History and with a minor in Physical Education. Eural Smothers became a teacher and coach at Hiram W. Johnson High School in Sacramento, California for 38 years before retiring. During his tenure at Hiram Johnson, serving as head track coach for 30 years, head cross country coach, head tennis coach, assistant football coach and athletic director.
Smothers life began with Eural Smothers, Sr. and wife Nettie Smothers; however he was raised by his grandparents Cecil and Lottrell Hall. He has two siblings: Euralon Ware (deceased) and Nathan Berry of Houston, Texas. During his retirement, Eural "Duck" Smothers enjoys the company of his wife of 27 years, Anna Smothers, and his children, David Smothers, his wife Latrice Smothers, Cynthia Sampson and Robert Horton, Jr., seven grandkids and two great-grandkids.
