A "Tri-State" Coach

Coach Edwards was born in Porter, Oklahoma and attended Carter G. Woodson High School in Tallahassee, Oklahoma. He received his BS degree from Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, where he majored in Physical Education and minored in Biology.

After graduation from Bishop, Coach Edwards began his coaching career at his alma mater, Tallahassee as principal and coached all sports-football, basketball and track. He came to Galilee High School and coached from 1955 to 1965 where he won several championships as the only coach at Galilee. His last coaching experience was at Kiabeto Junior Senior High School in Kiabeto, Arizona, where he continued to win championships. What is unique about Walter is he never lost more than 3 games a year in a year in football while pursuing championships in three states. Although he was playing against larger schools with several of their coaching staffs, he was his only assistant.

Coach Edwards is now a retired cattle rancher outside of Marshall, Texas. He serves in local, state and national organizations such as national President of the Carter G. Woodson Alumni Association, President of St. John Junior and Senior Usher Board, Commander of American Legion, G. A. Thompson Post #878 and Vice President of Southern Baseball Umpires Association of Longview, Texas.

We welcome Coach Walter B. Edwards into the 2001 Texas African American Coaches Association (TAACA) Hall of Honor 2001 Hall of Honor.
