Coach Norville attended Central High School in Jefferson, Texas, where he starred in football and track. He attended Tillotson College (before the merger with Samuel Huston in 1952) and continued his athletic career in football and track, graduating in 1950. He received his masters degree from Prairie View and another masters from North Texas in counseling. He did additional study at East Texas University. Coach Norville only worked in one system, Pyle High, in Kaufman where his record was 104 wins and 41 losses.
He was an outstanding community leader in the 1960s and an annual scholarship was given honoring Coach Norville. A "Homer and Fern" day was also designated honoring him and his wife for a total of 80 years of service in education. His coaching produced a world-class sprinter in Edwin Johnson and his life's work was an example for all youth he touched in Kaufman.
Currently he is a board member of Trinity Valley Community College, a board member of Rose Hill Water Supply Corp and President since 1990, a board member of Kaufman City Children Emergency Board (a Fern Norville center which raises funds to support the shelter), President of 100 Black Men of West Texas, Inc of Lubbock Texas, President of the Huston-Tillotson Alumni Chapter of Lubbock, and a member of several other community organizations whose sole purpose is to help youth.
Norville's years at Kaufman before he retired in 1991 were full of rich wonderful experiences. He met and married Amanda Fern (Beaman) Norville, the school nurse, and from their union three children were born and he reared three wonderful nephews. Currently, he is married to Dorothy (Phea) Norville.
After 15 years, the school integrated but Pyle High School never had a losing season except in 1953 and 1955. His coaching experience included two state playoff seasons, a wonderful basketball program and an excellent program. His world-class sprinter, Edwin Johnson, along with Jimmie Sanders and others set records all over the state and at the state track meet in Prairie View before integration.
We are proud to induct Coach Homer "Redskin" Norville into the Texas African American Coaches Association (TAACA) 2001 Hall of Honor.
