Naomi Edison is a native of Bay City, Texas. She graduated from Hilliard High School where she lettered in basketball, track and won State in tennis. She was also a cheerleader and a drum major for the high school band.
Naomi attended Prairie View A&M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She received a Master of Science in Health & Physical Education from Texas Southern University in 1976.
Naomi's teaching and coaching career began at E. A. Greer High School in El Campo, Texas. While at Greer she trained several tricksters who participated in the Metropolitan Track Club of Houston. As a reward for her excellent coaching skills, they were given the opportunity to travel to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the Drake Relays. Soon afterwards, Naomi transferred to El Campo High School where she won several District Championships in volleyball. In 1964, Naomi was given the opportunity to coach and teach in Houston, Texas. She began a long and illustrious 25-year career at Dick Dowling Middle School. Coach Edison's standards set the foundation for her success through the teaching of basketball, volleyball, soccer, and track & field. They received innumerous district, bi-district, and city championships.
After 25 years of coaching on a middle school level, Naomi dedicated her last seven years of coaching to Houston's James Madison High School. While there she coached basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, and track & field. She retired from HISD in May 1996. Since retiring, Coach Edison has continued to contribute her services as a track & field official. Naomi Edison is a member of the Texas Girl's Coaches Association and the USA Track and Field Officials Association.
Some of Coach Edison's special honors include: Houston Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Hilliard High Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
Naomi has been a long-standing, dedicated member of Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. J.J. Roberson, Pastor.
Naomi Edison has two daughters, Rae Alicia and Carmen; four grandchildren, Darrell, Crystalle, Sedrick, and Cryshelle; and one adopted grandchild, Wendy Devroe.
