Coach William Sims attended Fred Douglas High School in Sherman, Texas where he participated in football, basketball, and tennis. Coach Sims along with his brother T.A. won the double AA state championships three straight years in 1954, 1955 and 1956 at Fred Douglas High School. He returned to Fred Douglas as head tennis coach where his teams won the following championships:

  • 1961 - AA State Championship in boys doubles
  • 1962 - AA state doubles and singles championship
  • 1963 - Third consecutive state championship, AA singles and doubles state championship
  • 1964 - Fourth straight state crown in doubles and singles
  • 1965 - 5th consecutive state title in doubles and singles
  • 1966-Boys single championship and girls doubles crown

From 1961 to 1966 his teams won tournaments all over Texas regardless of classification.

Colleges attended by Coach Sims include Huston Tillotson where he participated in tennis and basketball and majored in health and physical education. He received his masters from Tarleton State University. In addition to coaching at Fred Douglas in Sherman, he also coached at Kirkpatrick in Fort Worth from 1967 to 1972. While in college at Huston Tillotson, Coach Sims was voted as the Most Outstanding Athlete and in 1961-62 school year he was awarded the Lonnie Bell Award for his athletic ability.

In addition to being a member of the Texas African American Coaches Association, he is a member of Campus Drive United Methodist Church and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He and his wife Mildred have two children, Le Ann Sims Person and son Ruston M. Sims. The TAACA is proud to induct Coach William Sims into our Hall of Honor for his outstanding coaching record and his contribution to athletics in the state of Texas.
