The Selection Committee is to be congratulated for selecting Mrs. Smith as the first woman to be inducted into the Texas Afro American Coaches Association Hall of Honor. Not only was she an outstanding athlete and scholar but her coaching records warrants special recognition for such an outstanding job.
Coach Smith graduated from Hilliard High School in Bay City where she was a member of the drill team, basketball team and graduated with honors. The basketball team won nine straight championships. She continued her career at Prairie View as a student athlete and scholar. She also attended Wharton Junior College, Trinity University and Sam Houston State University and received her M.S. degree from Prairie View University.
While coaching at Hilliard High School, Coach Smith's team won six state girls championships and ties one before her retirement in 1972. She has won many honors and received many recognitions including a National Science Foundation in 1949 and selected as the outstanding leader in elementary and secondary education in 1976. Her election to the Hilliard High Alumni Association Hall of Fame is a tribute to this outstanding coach.
