Luther booker is a native Houstonian and a graduate of Phyllis Wheatley High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Prairie View A & M University. Coach Booker was an assistant football coach at Booker T. Washington High School for twelve years. In 1960 that football team was co-state champion with Moore High School of Waco. In 1968 after entering the University Interscholastic League, Washington's football team advanced to the semi-final game with Reagan High School of Austin. While at Booker T. Washington, Coach Booker was also assistant track coach, winning the State Championship on one occasion. As head swimming coach, his team won three state championships.
Luther Booker has been head football coach at Jack Yates High School for fifteen years and has won or tied for thirteen district championships. His teams advanced to the State finals on two occasions, 1981 and 1985 and won the 5A State crown in 1985.
Coach Booker became the first black coach of a predominately Black school to win the 5A State Championship. This was a first in the history of the University Interscholastic League. His perfect season of 16-0 included many historical moments:
- The first class 5A team to win 16 games in a single season.
- The first U.I.L. Football State Championship for Jack Yates.
- The first Houston Independent School District team to claim the title in 32 years.
- The first all-black team to win the Class 5A Football Championship.
In his fifteen years as helmsman of the Varsity Lions, his record is 138-31-2.
Academic excellence is Coach Booker's first priority. He believes a student must be academically able in order to function properly athletically.
He is married to Clairene C. Jones Booker and is the father of three children, Annette Laverne, Guy and Trula Renee. Annette is a graduate of the University of Texas and is a CPA. Guy graduated from Rice University and is a promising CPA. Trula also graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Nutrition and is currently a graduate pharmacy student at Texas Southern University.
Coach Booker holds professional memberships in various local, state, national educational and coaching associations.
