Coach Humphery graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Houston in 1948 where he starred in football. He went to Texas College and graduated from Texas Southern in 1953. He received his B.A. Degree from Texas Southern and his M.A. Degree from Prairie View in 1966. His coaching career include his Alma Mater at Booker T. R. G. Lockett Junior High, Lincoln Junior High and Jesse Jones Senior High from which he retired in 1990.
Bo made outstanding contributions not only in football under such coaches as Big Ben Stevenson, and Elliot Harvey, but his tennis team won both singles and doubles championship in the City of Houston in 1957. He also served as an assistant football coach for two East/West All-star games under the old Prairie View League in 1961 and 1962. Honors received by Coach Humphery include: All City Guard, Honorable Mention All Southwestern Conference, Co-Captain of TSU in 1952, member of TSU's national championship team in 1952, plus a host of other honors. He is also affiliated with several professional organizations including the Texas African American Coaches Association and the Gulf Association USA Track and Field, Vice President.
Professional football has benefited from coach Humphery's coaching which includes: Darryl Green --Redskins; Alfred Williams -- Cincinnati Bengals; Kerry Semien -- Fort Worth Arena Football League; and many others to join the coaching and ministering professions.
Bo is a Christian gentleman and a family man. He is a member of Friendship Baptist Church where Reverend F. N. Williams II is the pastor. He is married to Pearl M. Humphery and they have two children, Andre and Patrice. Bo credits his mother, Lilliam Wiley as a source of inspiration and encouragement. He is active in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and a board member of Good Neighbor Health Care Center.
Coach Humphery retired in 1990 with an outstanding record of 143 wins, 70 losses and 12 ties. We are proud to induct Coach James W. "Bo" Humphery in the Texas African American Coaches Hall of Honor.
