Curtis H. Collins Sr. attended Fred Douglas High School in Jacksonville, Texas. His high school athletic career began as a football guard/tackle. His skill as a Tackle earned him a Spot on his college team at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. He was one guard/tackle that very few opposing teammates were able to get by.
After service in the U.S. Navy and college graduation he began his coaching career at Troup Central High School in Troup, Texas. He was able to win several district titles in Troup and later moved to coach at Fred Moore High School in Denton, Texas where he won seven district titles and was a State competitor four times.
After integration of Fred Moore High School and Denton High School, he became Defensive Line Coach at Denton High School. The first year that his staff played with the Denton Broncos, the Broncos had the best record that they had had in forty years. The Broncos continued each year to improve in district competition.
Coach had a combined record of forty-six years as an educator, including seven years as head Football Coach, Troup Central High School, Troup, Texas; and thiry-nine years in Kenton ISD as Head Football Coach at Fred Moore High School, Denton, Texas; Defensive line Coach and Dean of Students at Denton High School, Denton, Texas. He was known by his peers and by students as an honest, fair competitor, and a well respected leader in the community. He always tried to encourage integrity and educational excellence from his athletes.
He earned a Master of Arts Degree from Bishop College and did additional graduate work at North Texas State University and Texas Southern University.
Coach Collins was and continues to be involved in church and civic organizations. Some of his honors include: Special Recognition for outstanding contributions in promoting better human relations in Texas from TSTA; The Denton Broncos All Sports Booster Club-Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Contributions as Commissioner-Denton Housing Authority; Meritorious Service from Denton Brown Coffee Club; Denton County Branch NAACP; and Denton County Teachers Association.
