Leon Hamilton graduated from Waldo Matthews High School in Silsbee, Texas in 1962, where he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He attended Wiley College on a football scholarship and is extremely proud to have played for the legendary Fred Thomas (Pop) Long. He received his bachelors degree in 1967, and went on to get his masters degree and his administrative certificate from East Texas State University in 1974.

Hamilton began his coaching career at Wiley College in 1967 serving as offensive line coach for two years. He moved on to coach at H.B. Pemberton Senior High School and Marshall Jr. High School. From 1972 - 1975, he worked at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas as Director of Student Affairs, Dean of Men and Director of Student Activities.

In 1975, he resumed his coaching career in McKinney, Texas as assistant football and head track coach, winning the district track title 2 years, 1 regional title and finished 2nd in the state meet in 1979. In 1980, he moved to Dallas, where he was hired to teach and coach at Woodrow Wilson High School, coaching Tim Brown of the L.A. Raiders to a city record in the long jump. He coached at Woodrow Wilson High School for six years before moving into administration. He married Evelyn F. Hamilton, and they have one son, Leon Edric Hamilton, Jr.
