After finishing Jackson High School in Corsicana, Cowboy continued his athletic career at Sam Houston where he participated in football, track and baseball. He received his Master Degree from Texas Southern and did further study at North Texas State University.
The colorful "Cowboy" Jones began his coaching career at Georgetown in 1950 then to Hearn, Carver of Midland, Dunbar of Fort Worth. He retired in 1985 after compiling a record of 346 wins and 179 losses in Basketball and a 36-13 record as a football coach. In addition to winning two championships at Midland, he won 4 district champions, and one state finalist. He was an assistant football coach at Midland when they were state finalists in 1961 and state champions in 1962.
His state championship team was honored at the University of Texas in 1987. Coach Jones has been a member of the EXPVILCA and the Texas High School Coaches Association and many other professional organizations. We consider it an honor to induct Willie "Cowboy" Jones into the TAACA.
