Ervin "Cat" Garnett graduated from I.M. Terell High School as an outstanding running back for Coach Marion "Bull" Bates. I.M. Terell won the first official State Championship in 1940 after being statewide organized for all athletics in the state for Blacks.
Garnett went on to Prarie View where he participated in football, baseball and golf; earning B.A. and M.A. Degrees. He began his coaching career in 1950 at Calvert, moved to Woodson High School in Abilene in 1953 and to Booker T. Washington in Wichita Falls in 1955. He coached until 1989 then went into administration. During his coaching career he compiled a record of 157 wins, 41 losses, and 4 ties, winning 2 state titles, 7 district titles and was a state finalist 3 times.
During his playing days, he was an All-State High School Fullback in 1941, All-Southwest Conference Quarterback in 1949, inducted into the Prairie View Hall of Fame in 1988 and made many significant contributions to athletics in the cities where he coached. His membership in professional organizations are many including the Prairie View Coaching School and the THSCA. We are proud to induct Ervin "Cat" Garnett into the TAACA.
