Coach Henson graduated from Jack Yates High School in Houston before attending Prairie View where he participated in football, baseball and basketball. His coaching career began in 1955 at Lincoln High School in College Station. He compiles a record of 300 wins, only 43 losses and 1 tie in his career. Henson coached at James Madison, Woodrow Wilson, and South Oak Cliff in Dallas where he won the State 5-A Championship in 1977 at Austin. He coached two All Americans in David Stallworth and James Lister. His honors include Coach of The Year in 1977. His unique record includes a tie for the State Championship in the old Prairie View Interscholastic League, two state runner-ups and several district and tournament titles. His 1977 State Championship team was the last to win in the old Gregory Gym at Austin.
