The Kirkpatrick Connection
In 1959 the 20 year old Gerald K. Beal became the head coach at Kirkpatrick after having had a phenomenal career at Bishop College as a quarterback from Marshall Pemberton High School. He soon added to his staff Sam Bishop, Lester Beene, and Bert Williams along with Donald Parker from Texas-College and Wilbur Byrd from Wiley. Thus began an East Texas (College) Connection at Kirkpatrick that produced state champions in football, basketball, and track. Beal later moved to IM Terrell in 1968 where he continued his phenomenal success as a football coach winning or tieing for the district championship the first year of integration when the news media quoted several white coaches as saying it would be three years before the black schools caught up with the whites. Beal won 6 district championships at Kirkpatrick and tied for 3 at IM Terrell along with two state titles and two runner-ups. He also sent several athletes to college and the pros.
Gerald Kenneth Beal, for your outstanding contributions to the field of athletics and to the community, we the members of the EX-PVILCA salute you as a distinguished member of the 1987 class of honorees.
