Spates is a graduate of Peabody High School, Hillsboro, Texas. At PHS, he played football, baseball, and ran track. He attended Paul Quinn and Prairie View A&M University, where he starred in football. Spates also studied at North Texas State University and the University of Denver.
In addition to coaching Fort Worth Dunbar to the state runner-up in 1962 against Yates of Houston losing 18-15, Spates was an all conference tackle at Waco Paul Quinn College. He also played semi-pro football and received several awards for his outstanding leadership. Coach Spates sent several athletes into professional football, Arthur Perkins with the LA Rams and Melvin Witt with the old Boston Patriots.
