"Pig" began his formal education at Kemp High School in Bryan, Texas. He also attended Paul Quinn, Prairie View, Western Reserve University and the University of Colorado. Among his many contributions include the induction into the national football hall of fame of Dick "Night Train" Lane, one of three professional players from his 1942 state championship football team at Anderson High School.
