"Buck Wheat" attended Wheatley High School in San Antonio, Texas, before starring at quarterback for Prairie in the early 40's. He did further study at The University of Denver, McNeese State working toward a doctorial degree after receiving his masters from Prairie View. After serving as an assistant at Hebert High he became head coach and coached an undefeated team to the state championship in 1958. Several of his former students became professional athletes. He retired from coaching in 1959 with a 46-43-2 record and had the unique distinction of being the principal of the last state football champions in 1966 of the old Prairie View League.
