Walter E. Day is a native of Corsicana, Texas. He graduated from G. W. Jackson High School, where he was an outstanding football player. After spending two and one half years in the Army, Day entered Samuel Houston College on an athletic scholarship and lettered in football, track, and baseball for three years.
Since graduating from college, he returned to his high school alma mater as head coach. During the ten year period, he compiled a 98-16-5 record including 9 district and 3 state championships.
He served a year as offensive coach at E.E. Worthing High School in Houston, Texas before coming to Fort Worth, I. M. Terrell in 1961 as head coach. For the seven years at Terrell, he had two district, one co-district, and one state runner-up.
During his football career, he was invited to provide the keynote lecture at the Prairie View A&M Twenty-Fifth Annual Coaching Clinic.
Day later lectured and coached the West squad in the 1965 Texas All Star game held in Houston, Texas, and was recipient of numerous other honors.
He served for three years as vice-principal of I. M. Terrell High School before becoming principal, where he remained until its closing in the 1972-73 school year.
Since the closing of I. M. Terrell High School, Walter Day has served in the Fort Worth School System as Assistant Director of Secondary Administration; Director, Pupil Personnel Services, and has recently assumed the principalship of O.D. Wyatt High School.
